Music for the mind is a singing session specifically designed for people living with dementia. It is an entertaining session that can help to improve co-ordination, confidence as well as long term and short term memory.
The session isn’t just about having a singalong; by using props, actions and songs which require call and response and singing in rounds etc it can be stimulating and challenging as well as great fun!
We always start off with a Welcome Song in which we welcome everyone to the session by name, this helps everyone get to know one another and feel included in the session.
After an gentle warm up, we sing a number of familiar songs. We also use bean bags, pom poms and instruments while singing to work on co-ordination and rhythm.
Music for the mind works better as a regular monthly session. We follow the same session for a number of months so that the session and songs are familiar and there is sense of routine.
Although Music for the Mind is designed for people living with dementia it is also beneficial for the carers and family to join in.
